This article is about building a business mindset, but in order to do so, you have to transition away from your job mindset first. I get really real in this one. I hope you can relate.
I am afraid to say it but…I think I may not have the business mindset quite yet.
I was faced with a question from my soon to be mentor and was taken aback by it.
The question was…
“As an entrepreneur: What would you do if you had to find 1k in the next 2 days?”
My first instinct was to say that I would borrow money from my family.
That’s not right!
How could I answer the question that way? I’m all about the lifestyle business and all that.
But here I am getting back into that mindset of just making money from my work. For instance, I am going to work some heavy hours this week.
My job is offering what is essentially OT hours, although we are all on salary. It’s a very good hourly rate. Let’s just leave it at that.
So I’m like, of course, I’m all over that. I’m gonna do as much of that as possible and get dat money!!
I’m all over it. Why?
I know exactly what I’m getting
I know it’s guaranteed money
I know it’s something that I can calculate rather easily
I could use the money.
I am going to work enough hours to pay the last month’s rent for my son in college. I have it all planned out.
And what I’m not seeing is that I should have this same fire when it comes to my business pursuits…
I should be excited to make that extra money.
That’s number one.
That excitement should definitely be there more for my business, though. I want that money for sure.
I mean, I’ve been all over that overtime opportunity since the moment it was offered. I knew that I had to take advantage of it.
It wasn’t going to pass me by.
No chance was I going to let this week go by without making that extra money. I have the same opportunity now with my business. There is no reason why I should be letting weeks go by without taking advantage of it.
I should have the same drive I have for my business as I do for those extra hours. I’m ashamed I haven’t had it.
I should have the same mindset for the money that can be produced in my business. I have a job, and it’s a great one, but still I know I need that extra cash.
I have this business.
This business can be a great one and should generate that extra cash well beyond any OT money my job could give me.
So why don’t I have that same urgency to get that business money?
The opportunity is there. I don’t have enough money to do everything I need to do to live. I’m comfortable (and maybe that’s a bit of the problem).
But that’s foolish!
I should be going about this whole thing full boar. I’m just setting things up and being patient.
I need more money!
I have to pay more bills!
I have to support my family more!
I have unfinished goals and dreams!
What am I doing?
This is no good.
I am willing to work hard for this OT.
These extra hours are going to take a toll. It’s like, not even funny. I’m going to be very tired this week. Working 8 hours straight then piling on an extra 3 hours on top of that.
I’m actually going all out to work my butt off for this! And honestly, I’m working hard for very little money. That’s the honest truth.
I’m essentially working 52 hours this week.
And those extra hours won’t mean a lot. It will be enough for my son’s rent but that’s not really a lot of money. And I’m willing to work hard for that little amount of money.
Don’t get me wrong. It’s not chump change. It’s a significant hourly rate.
But I should be able to work just as hard for my business.
I should be willing to work long hours.
I should be willing to get little sleep for it.
I should do whatever it takes…because frankly, I need to!
Now, enough about me.
I like to use myself as an example at times but where are you at in this story?
Are you looking for OT money so you can get ahead?
Are you needing that extra money?
Have you been working just as hard for your business as you do for your job?
You may not work just as hard but are you working the OT hours?
Can you do an extra 12-15 hours a week?
That is what it takes.
And actually, what I teach now is that it’s so easy to produce these hours with a daily routine.
As long as you’re focused and know for sure what you’re trying to do.
It’s a silly question but most people don’t know how to start because they have no idea what they want to do. And you can’t truly start anything till you know that.
Once you know, you should be willing to go all out for what you want.
You can’t do it the other way. Stop looking to do more of your job for little money. Do your own thing and make more money!
I hate that last sentence for being so cliche but it’s the truth. What can I tell ya?
That’s the mindset you need to have. Not how much money can you make doing overtime this week.
You should be asking how much money can I make if I can get that client or sell that product or provide that service for someone.
That’s where your mindset should be at right now. It’s a shift that you have to make. Or else you’ll be in the same position, this time next year.
That’s not what you want.
Get into that business mindset.
You’re kidding yourself if you don’t.
I’m not sure what that business mindset is for you. However, I will say that it begins with one thing.
Your business mindset will take shape once you believe that you are a true authority…
Until you develop that within yourself, nothing will truly start for you. You can’t have that business mindset, because you won’t believe it.
Contrary to popular belief, you can’t always fake it till you make it if you have this issue.
Some people can.
Several people can cheat their minds and their audience to be something their not…till maybe one day they are.
Some people are very comfortable gobbling up followers and doing the status quo to climb the status ladder.
That’s not me. Not totally! haha.
But I’m thinking that’s not you either if you’ve read this far.
Your business mindset must be trained until you see yourself as an authority.
How do you get this done?
I will say it till I’m blue in the face because it’s been proven to work for me.
Daily, no days off, do focused singular work on a creative task performed over an extensive period of time.
I know of no other way.
There is no better way, in my opinion, to build this mindset. It has worked for me, it will work for you.
You will begin to transition from that job mindset to your true business mindset. It will just take time.
But it will develop faster than you think.
Start building your business mindset now. One day at a time will get the job done, guaranteed.
