Why You must Stay Relevant to Keep Your Audience Engaged at All Costs


You have to stay relevant because sometimes, people forget.

We’re human.

We like what you do, but we can also forget that, we like what you do. Cuz it’s a busy, busy world. Our attention is tossed to and fro.

And it’s just a bit crazy to think that we will remember you always.

So what am I getting at actually?

I’m trying to say that you must stay relevant or you’ll miss out on so many opportunities.

How long has it been since you’ve written a blog post?

How long has it been since you’ve put out a social post?

Done a video?

Put on a livestream?

And yeah, you might have done a few good posts here and there. Created that one great video. Done a spectacular livestream sometime last year.

But like the immortal words of the iconic Janet Jackson…“What have you done for me lately?”

That will ring true every time.

Most people aren’t interested in what you did last year. They might remark about it. But they’re not concerned about last year.

They want to know what you’re doing now.

They may ask, “Hey, are you still doing that show?”

“Are you still writing that blog?”

“You still creating those funny videos?”

Things like that.

But they’re saying that because they want to tune into that same content today. They don’t want the reruns. At least not in this online world.

They want the here and now. That’s what counts.

They reminisce about your great show. But they want that great show back now!

The question is, why are they asking that question today? Probably cuz they’ve lost touch with you somehow right? They don’t see your show listed anywhere.

They don’t see you on social.

You’re not advertising anywhere.

You’re not doing things consistently.

You’re not relevant!

People see you’re not around. So they look elsewhere.
And why shouldn’t they?

Are they supposed to wait for you?

Please!

Who are you that they should wait?

People will pay attention to the ones who are on the air.

If you’re on hiatus then you’re not relevant. You’re not in the minds and hearts of the people. They are now being captured by any and everyone else. The people who are on the air!

You can’t have a lull. You can have a week off or maybe two. But you can’t be off too long that people start thinking of you like it’s nostalgic.

Those platforms that you used to dominate with a growing audience will not be the same. In fact, you’ll have trouble trying to fill the seats. Yes, your audience will no longer be there.

Why?

Because that audience now has their attention placed elsewhere. They’ve forgotten or perhaps, even given up on you. You’re now in the past. Even worst, should I say you’re a has been???

God forbid.

There are only a few things in this world that can get away with having huge layoffs and come back to an awaiting crowd.

One show, for sure, can do this right now. And I’m not happy about it but it’s the Game of Thrones!

You’ll wait for them. You may not like it but you’ll wait a year and half, at the time of this writing, to see the next season. You can also say that about ‘Star Wars’. Most will wait years for that next movie.

I’m thinking you don’t have the kind of pull yet.

Missy Elliot whenever she comes out with her music, has that kind of pull.
Outkast, if they ever come out with anything, they have that kind of pull.

Sorry, I got into a music thing there but you get what I’m trying to say. You have to get that pull over time. Keep it going and stay relevant.

Stay interesting. Stay useful. Stay entertaining.

Keep it going cuz if you don’t, someone else will. Now this is better said than done. You just need a plan.

Yes, I said a plan.

A plan for your social relevance, your blog relevance, YouTube relevance, livestream relevance…

I mean, let’s face it.

Do you have a plan?

Do you have a strategy?

Look at Kim Kardashian’s strategy. She stays in the limelight. She posted that she took 6000 pictures on her vacation. Why?

Do you think she has a strategy?

Her outfits that leave nothing to the imagination is a strategy.
Her invitation to have paparazzi all around her is a strategy.
Now she may not like it at times as we’ve known her to use body doubles for her privacy.

But she uses her personal stage as a strategy to say,

“Hey sponsors, who do you see in the news each and every day?”, “Me…now pay me!”

It’s a strategy that works.

You need to have an initial strategy and a way to automate it. If you don’t have that, it will continue to be hard and frustrating.

It doesn’t have to be that way.

You can get this done in a short amount of time. Just create a power hour for your social relevance.

Your blog presence is another animal altogether. This could be a week thing where you work on it a half hour each day.

Your YouTube strategy could be a weekly thing too. But several video stars create videos just all the time.

It will depend on your schedule. You just need a schedule to stay in the mix. Cuz if you’re not in the mix, people will know.

They will realize that you’re not really in the game.

You’re not really hustling.

You’re taking a little bit more time off than usual right?

So you’re not doing as much as the others. Clearly.

If people see you here doing stuff. And they see over there doing stuff. And you’re making waves going everywhere. Getting followers and building a community.  You’re getting your fair share of comments.

Something must be happening.

If you’re not visible, nothing is happening.

So stay visible.

Why?

Because people forget.

And frankly, you forget too.

You forget how important it is to keep in touch with your audience, follow up and simply care about them.

Do you care?

Then you have to stay on the air!

Stay relevant always.
